Online tips from Mrs. Hullermann's fifth grade students

Cyberspace safety rules

Don’t talk to strangers in:

  • Chat rooms
  • Signing up as a “friend” on a website
  • Instant messaging
  • Comment boards
  • Blogs
  • Webcams
  • E-mail
  • VoIP (Internet phone)
A stranger is any person you do not know in real life!

Safe Passwords and User Names

Keep your private information safe:

  • Use letters and numbers for your passwords and user names – no real words
  • Don’t use – name, age, birthday, where you live (city, street, state), or hobbies
  • Six letters or numbers - long enough so people can not guess it but not too long that you can not remember it!
  • Make it unique – use different passwords for different sites
  • Don’t give out your password to anyone – anytime!

The Internet can be a fun a safe way to talk to people

Before you give out any private information about yourself online:

  • Ask your parents for permission before using the computer
  • Use computers only when a grownup is home and able to help you
  • Read the web site’s Privacy Policy - this tells what they will do with any private information you choose to give them

If a stranger tries to talk to you online:

  • Tell your parents right away
  • Log off the computer

Remember, a stranger is anyone you don't know in real life!
